CLUB NEWS MAY 2017

COMPETITIONS AND TEAMS

Round 1 of the Founders Trophy started with 22 ties.

May Medal: another fantastic turnout of 53 players competed in the May Medal. Congratulations to the winners, with net scores shown:

Division 1:  Dave Tayor (69), runner-up Chris Nicholas (71), third Dan Hall (73)

Division 2:  Dave Pitt (also overall lowest net score of 64), runner-up Trevor Warren (66), third Mark Ryder (69)

Division 3:  Roy Hutchinson (67), runner-up Ted Stokes (73), third Stephen Cable (76)

The qualifiers for the County Gold medal are Chris Nicks and Adey Yemm.

The Captain’s Charity (Prostrate Cancer UK) made a £27 from the two nearest the pins competitions. Many thanks to all who entered these and congratulations to Dave Brown and Wayne Anderson for picking up the prizes.

Siemens Bowl: congratulations to the Rodway players who won their match against Wishaw by 139 to 137 points.  Well done to Steve Yemm, Roy Hutchinson, Steve Day and Ben Grieve for travelling away and to John Bick, Trevor Warren, Wilf Nicholls and Steve Clayson for playing at home. The team now play a club from Doncaster in the next round.

Harvington Friendly match: thanks for playing in the men’s team in the match away at Harvington.  Well done to Oliver Purdy and Roy Hutchinson, Dave Matthew & Steve Yemm and Paul Purdy and Pars Ghadiali who won their matches, helping to secure a 3-3 draw.

County Gold Medal Competition Qualifier: we had 10 entries for this competition - qualifiers will be named as soon as possible.

The Seniors have made a great start to their inter-club matches - we have so far played 7 matches, 3 home and 4 away.       We have won 6 and lost 1. The three away wins were at Tewkesbury Park, South Cerney and Sherdons. Well done to all those involved. Let’s keep it up!

Seniors Scratch Foursomes – the Seniors Team lost to Broadway in the first round of this.

Carol Lane qualified for the regional final of the English Golf 'Bridgestone Chase your Dream' competition held at Tehidy Park Golf Club,  Cornwall on 3rd May. Although she didn't qualify for the Grand Final to be played at Woodhall Spa in August, she was placed 14th out of 72.

Severn Vale Trophy: so far we have played 5 matches,  won 4 and  halved one.

FACEBOOK

We hope you are enjoying the updates that are now being provided on the Rodway Hill Facebook pages. To find the club on facebook, the page is Rodway Hill Golf Course, with the club logo as its picture, @rodwayhillgolf.

DEFIBRILLATOR FUND

We have now raised almost exactly £1000, so many thanks to all of you who have contributed.  This is sufficiently close to our target/need that we are talking to suppliers and finalising arrangements at the Club.  We hope the AED will be up and ready for use during the next few months.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2017

The Committee has now finalised the arrangements for this as follows:

ROUND 1: SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 9

ROUND 2: SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 16

ENTRY FEE FOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: £6 to be paid on September 9.

ENTRY FEE FOR THE RABBITS: £3 to be paid on September 9.

Winners:

Gross winner, runner-up and third based on the combined gross scores for the two rounds.  The gross winner is the Club Champion

Net winner, runner-up and third (taken from those who are not among the gross winning three gross scores)

Seniors net winner, runner-up and third. Seniors need to declare in advance if they are or are not competing for senior prizes. Seniors cannot also win either a gross or net prize if they choose to compete as seniors.

Rabbits – net winner, runner-up and third based on a single round played on the first Saturday.

On the entry form, players will be asked to indicate whether they are entering the Club Championship or Rabbits.  There is no option of entering just Round 1 of the Club Championship – in effect, the Rabbits replaces the September monthly medal.

Both rounds of the championship, and the Rabbits, are qualifying competitions.

The starting order for Round 1 of the Championship will be handicap order, Round 2 starting order will be determined by gross scores in Round 1, so that the lowest scorers go out last.

VOUCHERS FOR MEDAL WINNERS

We can confirm that we will be giving vouchers to the winners of medals rather than actual medals, from the July medals 2017.  We will  ‘save up’ the vouchers and distribute them on Presentation Evening, rather than hand out smaller amounts each month.  The vouchers will be for spending through Rodway Hill, and Victor will be pleased to help you spend larger amounts through selecting items from catalogues, rather than just what is in the shop.  We will also continue to have a single medal for the best net score each month which will also be presented at Presentation Evening. There will be voucher prizes for each Division, but just the one medal for the overall best score.

The planned value of the vouchers is as follows:

MEMBERSHIP NUMBERS

More than 200 members have either renewed or joined the Club.  If you have yet to renew yours, please do so as soon as possible, so that you can retain your handicap, enter competitions and enjoy the other benefits of membership, especially a County Card.

WELCOME

Welcome to the members section. We are the Club members of Rodway Hill Golf Club.  There are more than two hundred of us, and we pay an annual subscription, currently £35, for which we get the following benefits:

1.     Affiliation to the English Golf Union, Gloucestershire Golf Union and National Association of Public Golf Courses. By belonging to an affiliated Club, members are able to play in competitions organised by the GGU and NAPGC, which in turn gives access to regional and national competitions, and our handicaps and membership are nationally recognised.  Approximately two-thirds of our annual subscription is spent on affiliations.

2.     Access to County Cards.  As members, we are entitled to  annual County Cards, at no additional cost, which enable us to play at other courses, not just in Gloucestershire, for approximately half price green fees.

3.     Official handicaps and entry to club competitions. We organise a range of competitions for men, women and seniors, through which members get their competition handicaps that enable them to play with other golfers across the country.  The Master Scoreboard section of the website records all of our scores, and enables us to track our scores. A significant part of the subscription is spent on administering handicaps and competitions; for example, we provide our Handicap Secretary with a laptop to enter all the result and to link into Master Scoreboard.  There are trophies and prizes for our competitions, and, insofar as possible, the cost of these is met from the competition entry fees.

4.     An annual presentation evening and an Annual General Meeting, at which a drink and refreshments are provided to those who attend from the subscription income.

5.     Through a Committee of volunteers, we liaise with the course owners and managers to ensure that the views of the members are taken into account in course improvements and developments.

6.     An annual calendar of events and competitions is provided to each member, so that we know what is happening when.

7.     Members are entitled to play for Club teams – we run Mens, Ladies and Seniors teams which play a range of matches and in other competitions.

The Club operates as a company, and as such office holders on the Committee are Company Directors.  In this way, we ensure that our members’ financial interests are best protected. Our membership year is the calendar year, so we renew subscriptions in January.
